SFMA together with WMRAS with the support from NEA will be embarking on the Food Waste Digestor Project.
On 19 Oct 2017, 7 associations penned the inter-TAC collaboration MOU, witnessed by SMS Dr Amy Khor during the WasteMet Asia Symposium. In this regard, SFMA and WMRAS have been in discussion on possible collaborations and a key problem statement was identified, which is the need to address the issue of increasing food waste in Singapore. Hence, both associations have explored on the option to have WMRAS's members to develop digesters to meet the needs of SFMA's food manufacturers' needs.
Do you know?
Each year, Singapore sends about 200,000 tonnes of waste to incineration as we do not have enough land in mainland Singapore for landfill. However, by year 2035, as Pulau Semakau will run out of landfill (space), there is a rising concern on where these waste can go then.
With the installation of food waste digestors, food waste generated by food companies can be disintegrated via the digestor into either liquid discharge or compost. Liquid discharge can then be used for general cleaning while compost can be sold to landscaping industry.
We would like to invite you to a sharing session on the scope of the project as well as the available funding schemes. After the sharing session, a site visit to a food digester operating site will be arranged to help companies understand the processes better. This will be open to companies who are interested and have signed up for this consortium project. Information on the learning journey will be released on 10 Sep 2019.
