Sugar is traditionally used to enhance the taste profile of products and provides extra energy. With the creation of more fanciful and delicious food products, the amount of hidden sugar as well as artificial ingredients an average person takes in each day will be a huge cause for concern. A growing body of researches have linked excessive sugar consumption to be the culprit of key health issues including obesity and diabetes.

According to Nielsen Global Health and Ingredient-Sentiment Survey done in 2016, Consumers are adopting a back-to-basics mind-set, focusing on simple ingredients and fewer processed foods. More than half of consumers say they're avoiding artificial ingredients, hormones or antibiotics, genetically modified organisms (GMOs) and bisphenol A (BPA). Global retail sales data also shows that consumers are cutting back on certain foods that are typically high in fat, sugar or sodium, but there remains a place for indulgences in consumers’ diets, particularly more healthful treats. Even here in our own backyard, 57% of the locals have highlighted that they followed diets that limit or prohibit consumption of some foods or ingredients. Top of the list are food products which are all-natural as cited by 54% of Singaporeans. In addition, respondents wished for more products with low/no sugar and low/no fat (both at 46%), foods that are organic (40%) and with no artificial colours (39%).

Hence, the above statistics presents immense opportunities in the area of clean label as well as reduced sugar products.
